The process

At Spring Hill Pottery, all pieces go through the same procedure. The piece first starts off as a ball of clay that has been weighed for the correct finished size. From there, the clay is shaped or "thrown" on a pottery wheel to obtain correct shape. After throwing, the piece is covered and allowed to dry until the correct stiffness is reached. Then it is trimmed to remove excess clay from the walls and bottom of the piece. Once the trimming process is completed, the trimmed piece is left out to dry completely before it is bisque fired in an electric kiln to about 1600 degrees fahrenheit. When the bisque firing is complete, the product is a hard pot that is slightly absorbent of water allowing the absorption of glaze. After glazing, the pots are placed back into the kiln and fired to 2230 degrees. This last firing produces the final product.
